visapur fort

Highlight

Adjoining Lohgad fort on one side & Bedse hill on the other, this huge fort is very easily approachable. It has plenty of water cisterns on the top amidst forest and a long circular plateau.

Explore the plateau on Visapur fort to observe the canon and bastion, Hanuman temple, various buildings (wadas), grinders used for construction and other remains of the fort; Hanuman temple was likely the patron deity of Visapur fort. Also catch views of Lohgad, Tikona and Tung Forts, and the expressway.

The trail through waterfalls (in monsoon) begins behind the green overgrowth at this turn. You will find water gushing down the stones as you trek up. In summer, this part of the trail will have dry rocks. The trail here is shaded with tall trees.

history

Visapur Fort was built between 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. In 1818, Visapur was attacked and occupied. Considering the strategic importance of Visapur, both the north (Konkan) and the south (Deccan) gateways were blown up.

Do this trek for the waterfall trail in monsoon and views from the plateau. This is an easy, monsoon trek close to the Mumbai-Pune express highway.

bhaje caves

Bhaje cave is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC located in Pune district, near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The caves are 400 feet above the village. It belongs to the Hinayana Buddhism sect in Maharashtra. The caves have a number of stupas, one of their significant features. The most prominent excavation is its chaitya, a good example of the early development of this form from wooden architecture, with a vaulted horseshoe ceiling.
