Rajmachi Fort, a renowned attraction, consists of two citadels – Shrivardhan (3250 ft.) and Manaranjan (2700 ft.) Forts in the rugged hills of Sahyadri mountains; surrounded by a wide plateau (aka Machi in Marathi), this fort overlooks the Borghat that was a prominent trade route connecting Mumbai and Pune in the past.
Udhewadi is a base village of about 22 houses situated on the Machi, at the southern foot of Manaranjan Balekilla of Rajmachi Fort.
In addition to having an eventful history, the twin forts of Rajmachi have earned recognition for their brilliant architecture. The fort complex consists of huge ramparts, strong walls, massive gateways, residential units, water reservoirs, administrative centres and secret gates for an exit.
Rajmachi Fort has been declared as a protected monument.
Several temples also form a part of this ancient fortification, some of which are even older than the fort itself. Between the two forts lies the temple of Kal Bhairava – the local deity. Ancient Buddhist caves are situated on the western side of the Rajmachi plateau, which was supposedly carved during 200 BC.
Established by the Satavahana, this citadel was captured in 1657 by Shivaji Maharaj from the ruler of Bijapur. From 1704 to 1705, it was under the Mughals, before the Marathas regained its control. When the Maratha kingdom witnessed a downfall in 1818, the British took over the ownership of this fort.
Unparalleled and memorable, Rajmachi Fort trek is sure to prompt you to keep coming back!
Kondana Caves situated in Karjat offers the ancient lifestyle of Buddhist followers. Ancient rock-cut caves, Kondana Caves are very famous Buddhist caves. These caves enclose sculptures, Vihara, Chaitya and Stupa. Sculptures and stupas are specimens of the ancient period Buddhist architecture. There was a natural disaster in the form of an earthquake in early 1900 by which many stupas, front entrance and floor of the caves were damaged.
